The Friday Five: 1/5/18

Good evening! I hope you have had a wonderful start to the new year! I jumped right into working on the small goals I mentioned last week. Today is day 5 of the 30 Day Minimalism Game so I have already found 15 items to donate. #decluttering

I will have to take a picture of everything when I am finished. It will be close to 500 items!

Here’s what I am loving this week:

Family time:

My sister came to visit this week! Somehow we ended up with only one picture together, but the highlights include:

  • Visiting The Real “Up” House:

There is a house south of Salt Lake City that looks just like the house Carl lived in in the animated movie, Up (if you haven’t seen it, you should)! People live in the house so we didn’t want to get too close, which explains why I am such an awkward distance away.

  • Petting animals at Wheeler Historic Farm:

Wheeler Historic Farm is free to visit and has animals like sheep, horses, cows, and turkeys. This sheep was quite friendly but I think he was just hoping I had food 🙂 The farm also has walking trails so we took advantage of the warm weather and got a couple of miles of walking in.

We found the cutest coffee shop in Sandy, UT. We loved the atmosphere and the employees were super nice. It’s always a plus when you get latte art!

We also made a trip over to Park City to visit Utah Olympic Park! Much of the building is a museum housing uniforms and medals from when the Winter Olympics were in Utah in 2002. While we were there we tried a simulated ski jump which is supposed to feel like the real thing. I could never get the balance down so by the time I had to land the jump, my avatar was tumbling out of control. She definitely ended up with spinal cord injuries on all three jumps. I guess I am not destined to be an Olympic athlete.

The park also usually has activities like zip-lining, bobsledding, and adventure courses, but that part wasn’t open that day.

1915 green juice

I have been having more symptom flare-ups the past few weeks and I am trying to figure out what has changed and what I need to do differently. For now, I have been thankful for bottles of juice to help me consume more calories and fruits/veggies when I don’t feel like eating much. I prefer brands like Suja and 1915 cold pressed juices but will grab Odwalla and Naked brands if the others aren’t available.

I saw this quote about mistakes on Instagram and I kind of love it:

“I hope that in the year to come, you make mistakes because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before and more importantly you’re doing something.” -Neil Gaiman

Sometimes the fear of failure or the unknown can prevent us from taking the first step. If we make mistakes or something doesn’t go as planned, it should be seen as something to learn from. You never know what will happen unless you try!

Treadmill walks:

Normally I feel like the treadmill is more of a “dreadmill” (the time ticks away so slowly and there is nothing to look at…), but this time of year I would much rather walk indoors than outdoors. This is mainly because I walk in the morning when the temperature is the coldest it will be all day and because it is still dark. Either way, walking is part of my daily routine. It helps my digestive system get moving and I usually feel hungrier during the day.

Bulk bins:

There is a grocery store chain here in the Salt Lake City area called WinCo Foods. They have the biggest section of bulk bins that I have ever seen! There are nuts and seeds, grains, baking items like sugars and flours, and even cereals.

I am a huge fan of bulk bins for several reasons: #1. You save money because you aren’t buying a name brand product. #2. If a recipe calls for an item you don’t typically use, you can buy just the amount you need. #3. It is a great way to try something new without purchasing a large bag, especially if you end up not liking it or it doesn’t agree with your belly.

Have an fantastic weekend!
